Virus Protection for Palms

by Anna C. McFadden, Ph.D., Professor, Educational Leadership and Technology

Viruses for Palms are still relatively rare, but . . . .there's no time like the present to take preventative measures.  Because a PDA has the ability to run programs, it can also run a virus.

McAfee's new Wireless Security Center has developed several virus protection programs for the Palm. Subscribe/purchase and you get a full year of the Wireless Security Center for only $29.95.  A 10-day FREE trial of McAfee.com Wireless Security Center is also available.

When you subscribe to McAfee's Wireless Security Center, you will have access to several anti-viurs programs.

Another well know anti-virus company, Symantec, has announced its own resident virus scanner for the Palm  Although this beta version of Symantec AntiVirus for Palm OS Scanner is fairly limited in scope, it is available for free (http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/palmscanner.html).

Computer Associates had came out with Inoculate ITfor Palm OS devices.  Inoculate IT is an application, which is installed like any other Palm application. As of this writing, the download is available at no cost for a limited time.

Take a few precautions against PDA viruses.  Back up your PDA.  When you HotSync this process backs up the majority of applications but not necessarily all of your third-party application.  Users who want added protection should look into backup software such as BackupBuddy from blue nomad  Always . . . download software from a trusted source.  See This Tech's for You:  PDAs:  What, What for, and Why?
